    thermoplastisch materiaal snel gefabriceerd kunnen worden. Ook zijn de productiekosten relatief laag, waardoor de helmen voor een schappelijke prijs aangeboden kunnen worden. De tegenhanger van thermoplastische helmen zijn composiet helmen. Het maken van een composiet helm duurt langer en er worden ook duurdere materialen gebruikt. Hierdoor zijn composiet helmen over het algemeen duurder dan thermoplastische helmen.

    Met dit in het achterhoofd, is het niet gek dat een thermoplastische helm razend populair is onder verschillende type rijders. De lage kosten hebben namelijk als voordeel dat je sneller een nieuwe helm koopt als de oude helm bijvoorbeeld is gevallen. Als een helm is gevallen, kan de veiligheid namelijk niet meer worden gegarandeerd. Zo kan er schade zijn opgelopen in de binnenschaal, waardoor het niet met het blote oog te zien is. Hierdoor is het aan te raden om een nieuwe helm aan te schaffen als deze een keer gevallen is of op een andere manier beschadigd is geraakt. Het is niet meer dan logisch dat je goedkope helmen sneller vervangt dan dure helmen.

    Thermoplastische helmen: verschillende materialen

    Een thermoplastische helm kan bestaan uit verschillende materialen. Dit komt omdat de term ‘thermoplastisch’ een overkoepelende term is. Alle thermoplastische helmen zijn gemaakt van kunststof. Een ander woord voor thermoplastische helmen is daarom ook wel kunststof helmen. De meest bekende materialen van een kunststof helm zijn polycarbonaat, ABS-polymariaat en polyamide. Deze materialen worden onder hoge druk in een mal geperst, waardoor de buitenschaal van de helm ontstaat.

    De levensduur van een thermoplast helm is ongeveer 5 jaar. Dit betekent dat je na 5 jaar de helm moet vervangen. De reden hiervoor is dat er bij het productieproces weekmakers worden gebruikt om de kunststof soepel te krijgen. Deze weekmakers kunnen door uv-straling, regen en andere weersinvloeden worden aangetast. Langzaam droger de weekmakers uit, waardoor het materiaal minder soepel wordt. Voor optimale veiligheid dient een thermoplastische helm daarom na 5 jaar te worden vervangen.
